How to make geodes from crystal epoxy resin

Geodes made from resin are breathtaking decorations that you can color to fit any interior. To create them, we use resin and various stones, glass shards, and glitter. For decoration, we paint lines and edges with metallic markers and metal colors. For beginners, we recommend using a silicone mold. However, you can also use any shaped PVC or MDF board or a canvas on a board to create geodes of giant sizes.

Production process

  1. Prepare the mold on a flat, covered surface and use tape to remove any dust and dirt. Level the surface ideally with a spirit level. If the surface is not perfectly level, the resin will run to one side.

  2. Mix the required amount of resin and hardener according to the size of the chosen mold. For geodes, we most often use Sea&Geode or Fluid resin.

The Sea&Geode resin has a higher density, making it ideal for detailed “painting” with resin. The Fluid resin is also very dense but still more liquid than Sea&Geode.

  3. Always mix the resin according to the mixing ratio specified on its packaging and weigh both components on a digital scale with gram precision. Remember to protect your skin, eyes, and respiratory system from contact with the resin or its fumes. Thoroughly mix both components from the bottom and scrape them from the sides of the cup (about 3-4 minutes), then pour the mixed resin into a new cup and repeat the mixing. This eliminates poorly mixed areas that might not cure properly.

  4. Divide the resin into several cups according to your needs and color it, or add glitter. Do not delay processing – the resin in the cup is in a higher column than the recommended maximum pouring height, so the resin works faster and might cure quickly in the cup.

Use only a few drops of color, and powdered colors about the size of two pea-sized balls. Add and mix colors gradually until you achieve the desired shade.

A large amount of color could negatively affect the properties of the resin; the maximum recommended amount of color in the mixed resin is about 2%.

  5. Pour the mixed and colored resin into the mold. There are many possibilities for application, and it depends on your imagination. You can place various stones and glass shards into the geodes to mimic a real geode.

Tip from Resin Studio
To create really thin and even lines from colored resin, use a strong zip bag. Pour the colored Sea&Geode resin into it, cut off a small corner, and squeeze the resin out.

  1. After pouring into the mold, remove surface bubbles using a lighter. Never hold the flame above the resin too long; just move it over the bubbles. If you hold the flame on the surface of the mold too long, the resin could stick to the mold, damaging both the mold and the product.

Remove bubbles from the bottom of the mold using a toothpick, for example. Also, be careful in the corners of the molds where bubbles might be trapped.

  2. Cover the product to prevent dust from falling into it and let it cure. You can cover the mold with a plastic box, or place cups around the mold and put cardboard on top.

  3. Finish the geode with metallic markers or metal colors from our selection.
