How to make pictures and seashores from epoxy resin

Resin pictures are becoming increasingly popular and have become a standalone discipline in resin crafting. Whether you plan to create a picture with minerals or a seashore, you will definitely find some tips useful for this exceptional creation.

Production Process

  1. Prepare an MDF board, a canvas on a board, or another surface on which you want to create the artwork on a flat, covered table. Use adhesive tape to clean the surface of any dust or debris. Level the surface ideally with a spirit level. If the surface is not perfectly level, the resin will flow to one side.

  2. If you are working on a canvas, first prepare it by pouring any resin into a thin casting layer (Start, iCrystal, Fluid) on its backside and letting this layer cure. This will ensure that the surface is reinforced, and when you start working on the front side, everything will not flow into the center.

  3. Mix the required amount of resin and hardener according to the size of the base. For paintings and seashores, we most often use Sea&Geode resin or Fluid resin. These resins are thick and adhere better, making them ideal for detailed work. With Sea&Geode resin, we create sea foam on ocean shores or entire paintings. You won't achieve beautiful cells in the sea foam with other resins. Both Sea&Geode and Fluid are suitable for geode paintings.

  4. Always mix resin according to the mixing ratio specified on the packaging, and weigh both components precisely on a digital scale. Protect your skin, eyes, and respiratory system from contact with the resin or its fumes while working. Mix both components thoroughly from the bottom and scrape the sides of the cup (for about 3-4 minutes), then pour the mixed resin into a new cup and mix again. This eliminates improperly mixed areas that may not cure properly.

  5. Divide the resin into several cups based on your needs and tint it or add glitter. Work quickly - resin in a cup is in a higher volume than the recommended maximum casting height, so it cures faster and may harden in the cup.

Use only a few drops of liquid colorants, and for powdered pigments, about the size of two peas. For sea foam, we use only Wave Effect powder to achieve perfect waves.

Gradually add and mix colors until you reach the desired shade. Adding too much pigment can negatively impact the resin’s properties; the maximum recommended amount of color in mixed resin is about 2%.

Experiment with colors; blue is not the only option.

  6. Apply the mixed and colored resin to your chosen surface. There are many application techniques, depending on your creativity. You can also add various stones and glass shards to your artwork.

  7. If you are creating a seascape and a sandy shore, pour sand into a cup, gradually add a small amount of resin, and mix. The goal is to coat the sand with resin while keeping it loose. If you add too much resin, you will create puddles instead of a sandy beach. Always create the beach first, then apply colored resin to the rest of the surface.

Tip from Resin Studio
For creating really thin and even lines with colored resin, use a strong zip-lock bag. Pour the colored Sea&Geode resin into it, cut off a small corner, and squeeze the resin out.

  1. After pouring the resin, remove surface bubbles with a lighter. Never hold the flame over the resin for too long; just pass it over the bubbles. If you hold the flame too long in one place, the resin may stick to the mold and damage both the mold and the artwork.

  2. Cover the artwork to protect it from dust and let it cure.

  3. Decorate the artwork with metallic markers or metallic paints from our collection.
