How to make pictures and seashores from epoxy resin

Resin pictures are becoming increasingly popular and have become a standalone discipline in resin crafting. Whether you plan to create a picture with minerals or a seashore, you will definitely find some tips useful for this exceptional creation.

What you will need for production

PVC board, canvas on board or MDF board
Epoxy resin
Color or metallic powder for resin
Decorative material
Consumables
Scale

Production procedure

  1. Prepare the MDF board, canvas on board, or other surface on a flat, covered table. Use adhesive tape to clean the surface from any dust and dirt. Level the surface ideally with a spirit level. If the surface is not perfectly level, the resin will flow to one side.

  2. Mix the required amount of resin and hardener according to the size of the substrate. For pictures and seashores, we most often use Sea&Geode resin. This resin is thick and thus stay in place better, making them suitable for detailed work.

  3. Always mix resin according to the mixing ratio indicated on the packaging, and weigh both components on a digital scale with gram accuracy. Remember to protect your skin, eyes, and respiratory system from contact with resin or its fumes while working. Mix both components thoroughly from the bottom and scrape the sides of the cup (about 3-4 minutes), then pour the mixed resin into a new cup and repeat the mixing. This will eliminate poorly mixed areas that might not cure properly.

  4. Divide the resin into several cups according to your needs and color it, or add glitter. Do not delay processing - the resin in the cup is at a higher level than the recommended maximum pouring height, so it works faster and might cure quickly in the cup.

Use only a few drops of color, and for powder colors, approximately the amount of two pea-sized balls. For sea foam, we use Wave effect powder.

Add and mix colors gradually until you achieve the desired shade. A large amount of color could negatively affect the properties of the resin; the maximum recommended amount of color in mixed resin is about 2%.

  5. Apply the mixed and colored resin to the chosen substrate. There are many possibilities for application, and it depends on your imagination. You can place various pebbles and glass shards in pictures.

  6. And how about sea foam? We have created a video on this topic, which explains everything much better than any description.

Tip from Resin Studio
To create really thin and even lines of colored resin, use a strong zip bag. Pour the colored Sea&Geode resin into it, cut a small corner, and squeeze the resin out.

  1. After pouring the resin, remove surface bubbles using a lighter. Never hold the flame over the resin for too long; just pass it over the bubbles. If you hold the flame too long on the surface of the mold, the resin might burn onto the mold, damaging both the mold and the product.

  2. Cover the product to prevent dust from settling and let it cure.
