VIDEO: Soap making instructions for beginners
Procedure for making soaps
- Cut the soap mass into cubes or other smaller pieces of 1-3 cm in size
- Melt the chopped mass in a water bath at 65 - 70 ˚C or in a microwave oven (50 - 70% of maximum power). Do not exceed a temperature of 75 ˚C, avoid boiling the mass.
- You don't have to stir the mass. Bubbles may form during mixing, which are undesirable in the final product.
- The mass can be kept molten at 65 ˚C if necessary.
- Add additives such as colourings, fragrances, herbs, other additives (oils, sea salt) or decorations (coffee beans, dried citrus slices, rhinestones and seashells) to the melted mass. Keep practicality in mind if you are not making decorative soap. Watch out for the added quantity. The rule of thumb in soap making is that less is more. If you use too many additives or decorations, your soap may not set.
- Pour the mixture into the moulds. You can also place the decorations at this point, when you have melted mass poured into the moulds.
- Spray the surface of the cast soap several times with spray alcohol, which immediately removes surface bubbles.
- Allow the soap to solidify at room temperature. Do not try to speed up the setting process, for example by putting it in the fridge. This could deprive the soap of some important ingredients.
- Each soap solidifies for a different amount of time and it also depends on what temperature you have melted it to. Solidification can take from 45 minutes to about 1 hour. Before removing from the mould, gently touch the surface or lightly squeeze the edges. If the soap is hard, you can remove it from the mould.
Tips for production and storage
- What if you don't have a thermometer and want to melt the mass in a water bath? If you don't have a thermometer, you will reach the correct temperature about the time when bubbles appear in the water, but it is not yet boiling.
- If you let the soap sit in a dry place at room temperature for 1-2 weeks, it will be firmer.
- If you need to smooth the soap, heat a knife in the steam and use the flat of the blade to flatten the soap.
- Store soaps at room temperature in a place that is neither too warm nor too humid. If you are making the soap as a gift, wrap it in paper, fabric (preferably cotton), organza bag, or even cellophane after it has aged.
WARNING: Store both the soap base and the soap made from this soap base wrapped to prevent weight loss through evaporation of water.
