How to decorate wooden boxes and blanks

Are you preparing to decorate a epoxy resin box, tray, or another wooden blank? Let's go through the process step by step. You can find a video tutorial at the end of the article.

1. Inspect the wooden blank for any imperfections, sand down any protruding frayed fibers, and remove any splinters. If you want to bevel the edges or sand shapes into the wooden blank, now is the right time.

2. Clean the blank from any dirt and dust thoroughly.

3. Tape all joints with PVC masking tape, which you can purchase from us here. If decorating the box lid, remember to tape from the inside and cover all parts of the blank that will not be decorated with foil. It's often hard to control dripping or a stray drop of resin from your mixing cup.

4. Carefully tape the edges. It is not necessary to make a so-called "dam," meaning the tape should not extend over the edge of the casting area. If you use an adequate amount of resin, you don't need to worry about it dripping. If you decide to make a dam with tape, be aware that the tape will conform to the pressure of the resin and may become wavy. After curing, you may need to sand and smooth the edges.

5. To prevent air bubbles from escaping from the wood, apply a primer to the desired area. You can get the primer from us here.

6. After the primer has fully dried, prepare everything needed for casting and mix the resin. You don’t need a large amount of resin. For example, approximately 40 grams of mixed epoxy resin will be sufficient for a tea box.

7. Do not pour the resin to the edges; instead, carefully spread it to the edges so it does not drip. Of course, if your goal is to have resin flow over the edges, do not tape them and pour as needed.

8. If you have resin spills over the masking tape, remove it just before the resin hardens or very carefully after it has fully cured. If the tape is difficult to remove due to the spilled resin, heat the area with a hairdryer or heat gun. This will soften the resin and make it easier to remove.
