How to work with holographic stickers in resin
Creating original resin decorations can be even more exciting with the use of holographic stickers. These add a captivating, shifting effect to each piece, instantly catching the eye. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process step by step so your result is truly worth it.
Tips for working with stickers
- If the stickers have a protective film, you can leave it on and pour the resin over it – the resin handles it just fine and the result will still look clean.
- The holographic effect shows best on a smooth and clear surface.
- Watch out for dust or fingerprints – they may remain visible under the resin.
What you’ll need
- Epoxy resin – we chose Fluid for its medium viscosity
- Holographic stickers suitable for resin
- Silicone mold of your choice
- Mixing cups and stir sticks
- Lighter (to remove bubbles)
Instructions:
1. Mix the resin according to the ratio on the packaging.
Every resin has its own mixing ratio – make sure to follow it carefully.
2. Pour the first layer
Pour a thin base layer of resin into the silicone mold and press in the holographic sticker. Don’t remove the protective film – it helps the sticker stay flat and stable.
3. Add drops of colors or inks
We used rainbow ink for a shimmery effect, along with blue and white. Add just a few drops of each color. Important – don’t use Colorfun dyes here, they’re not alcohol-based and won’t absorb into the resin.
This is exactly why we picked Fluid resin – it has medium viscosity, so the colors don’t sink straight to the bottom.
Do not remove surface bubbles at this stage! The alcohol in the inks will make them disappear on their own, and using a flame might ignite the colors.
4. Create patterns
Now you can gently swirl the colors with a stick or toothpick.
5. Let it cure and pour the second layer
This depends on the type of resin. For Fluid, we waited 24 hours before pouring the second layer, which we tinted white. After pouring, wait 10 minutes and then briefly pass a lighter over the surface to remove bubbles.
6. Demold after curing
After 24 hours, gently press a fingernail into the surface. If no mark is left, the resin is cured and you can safely remove it from the mold.
7. Attach the components – done!
If you’re making keychains like we did, all that’s left is to drill a hole, screw in a loop, and add the keyring.
