What is a Picky Pad?
A Picky Pad is a sensory-motor tool designed to improve fine motor skills and as a way to keep hands and mind busy for those who feel the need to pick, play with their fingers, or simply relax. In today’s world, where our hands often engage with electronics and less with manual or creative tasks, training motor skills is important not only for children but also for adults. The Picky Pad is also used as a tool to relieve stress and improve concentration.
What is it made of?
The Picky Pad is made from liquid silicone, into which various beads, stones, shells, and other small objects are poured, ideal for touching, pressing, or picking. There are countless variations, and it’s up to you to customize the Picky Pad according to your needs.
How is it used?
The objects embedded in the silicone that harden can be extracted with your fingers or tweezers. It depends on what you enjoy more or what has greater significance for your fine motor skill practice.
How to Make a Picky Pad at Home?
Making it is really very simple. You’ll need:
- Liquid silicone;
- Beads, stones, shells, or other small objects (they must not be made of silicone, or they will stick);
- A mold or container for casting, such as an old food container.
Instructions:
- Prepare the silicone mixture according to the instructions on the package.
- Add small objects to the mixture and stir. If you are making a larger Picky Pad, it is better to pour a thin layer of silicone into the container, sprinkle it with small objects, and repeat the process.
- Pour the silicone into the mold and let it harden (usually for several hours).
- Once hardened, remove your Picky Pad from the mold, and it’s ready to use!
